Drogheda Boys & Girls FC’s 2014 Claret side produced an excellent all-round performance to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Tommy Coady Memorial Cup, with a deserved 2-0 victory away to Leicester Celtic in Loreto Park.

Coming into the game full of confidence following their Round of 16 win over St Mochta’s, the lads started brightly and immediately took control of the game. Their passing and movement in the opposition half caused early problems, and it wasn’t long before that pressure told.
The opening goal came after a dangerous delivery from Emmanuel Edosa created chaos in the Leicester Celtic box. Although the initial effort was cleared off the line by the goalkeeper, the ball broke kindly to Olly Proctor, who showed great awareness and composure to lift it over the keeper and into the net.
Buoyed by the early goal, Drogheda continued to push forward and were rewarded again shortly after. Edosa was once more at the centre of the action, producing a brilliant individual run down the wing before delivering a pinpoint cross into the box. Luke Black met it perfectly, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner to give DBGFC a commanding 2-0 lead.

Leicester Celtic responded well and began to grow into the game as the first half progressed, but Drogheda’s defensive unit stood firm. Markas Silikas, Darragh Downes and Aaron Mulligan were outstanding at the back, dealing confidently with everything thrown at them. They were well supported by Max Maguire and Mohamed Aqib Ibrahim, as the team showed great organisation and resilience to maintain their advantage going into half-time.
The message at the break was clear – stay disciplined, absorb the pressure, and protect the lead. The players executed that plan to perfection in the second half.
With Sasa Donica commanding his area from goal, and the defensive line continuing to work tirelessly, Leicester Celtic found it difficult to break through. The shape and communication across the team ensured that every attack was dealt with effectively.

Despite focusing on their defensive duties, Drogheda remained a threat going forward. Aaron Doran and Kyle Corrigan combined well in attacking areas, creating several promising chances, and were unlucky not to add a third goal. Credit must go to the Leicester Celtic goalkeeper, who produced a number of excellent saves to keep the scoreline down.
In the end, it was a complete team performance – strong defensively, clinical in attack, and full of determination throughout.
A special mention goes to Emmanuel Edosa, whose outstanding display earned him Man of the Match, playing a key role in both goals and causing constant problems for the opposition.
