Cup action took centre stage at Marley’s Lane as our 2013 side welcomed Cabinteely FC, with a place in the next round of the Jimmy Flood Cup on the line.

The Drogs were a little slow out of the blocks, adjusting to the return to grass, and were punished early on. An unfortunate error allowed Cabinteely to take the lead, finishing well to go in front.

To their credit, the response from Drogheda was excellent. The lads stayed patient, trusted their style of play, and began to dominate possession, gradually breaking down a well-organised Cabinteely side.

The equaliser arrived through Padraig “Mr Cool” Murphy, who showed great composure to finish, following a quality assist from Conor Dunne.

Momentum continued to build, and it wasn’t long before Drogheda took the lead. A pinpoint corner from Murphy found Olly Timmons, who rose highest at the back post to head home.

The third goal of the half was the standout moment. Rian Crahan picked the ball up deep, drove forward with purpose, and unleashed a superb strike into the roof of the net to give Drogheda a 3-1 lead at the break.

The second half saw more controlled football from the home side. While chances were more limited, Drogheda remained on top, with the Cabinteely goalkeeper producing a number of excellent saves to keep his side in the game.

The result was sealed from another set piece, as a well-delivered corner found Fionn Farrelly, who applied the finishing touch to secure a deserved victory and send Drogheda into the next round.

A special mention goes to Adomas Kapocius, who delivered an outstanding performance at right back to earn a well-deserved Player of the Match.
