Drogheda Boys’ Leinster Senior League side secured promotion in style on Sunday afternoon with a superb 6-1 victory over Ardmore Rovers, capping off a remarkable season under the management of Adam McGinn and Cormac Reid.

With promotion on the line, the significance of the occasion was clear from the atmosphere around the club before kick-off, and the players responded with a performance full of quality, determination, and character.

The visitors were reduced to ten men early in the contest when D. Rafferty received a red card in the 10th minute, but despite the numerical disadvantage, Ardmore Rovers struck first through an O. Kelly penalty on 36 minutes to briefly silence the home support.

Rather than panic, Drogheda Boys showed the resilience and composure that has defined their campaign all season. The second half produced an outstanding response from the home side as they completely took control of the game with an attacking display worthy of the occasion.

Tristian Rowe brought Drogheda Boys level just two minutes after the restart, giving the side the momentum they needed. From there, the floodgates opened.

Salako fired Drogheda Boys into the lead on 52 minutes before adding his second just two minutes later as the hosts overwhelmed Ardmore with pace, movement, and relentless pressure in attack.

T. McEnteggart added a fourth on the hour mark following another excellent team move, while J. Jones got on the scoresheet with Drogheda Boys’ fifth goal in the 70th minute.

With the celebrations already beginning around Marley’s Lane, Salako completed his hat-trick deep into stoppage time to put the seal on a dominant 6-1 victory and spark scenes of celebration at the final whistle.

The result confirms promotion for the LSL side and marks a huge achievement for Adam McGinn, Cormac Reid, and their management team in their first season in charge. Following a difficult campaign last year, the turnaround this season has been exceptional, with the squad showing tremendous commitment, togetherness, and consistency throughout the year.

The achievement is also a significant moment for Drogheda Boys & Girls FC as a whole, reflecting the continued progress being made both on and off the pitch. Supporters at the game also got a first glimpse of the groundwork beginning for the club’s new changing room development, another major step forward for the future of football at the club.

Chairperson Lauren praised the squad following the final whistle:

“What this group has achieved this season is something they should all be incredibly proud of. The commitment, attitude, and standards they have shown throughout the year have been outstanding. To secure promotion with a performance like that says everything about the character in the dressing room.

“They have represented Drogheda Boys brilliantly all season and given everyone around the club a huge lift and a real sense of pride. This is a massive day for the club.”
